Survey Outcome
Following on from last
weeks directed task, interviewing a fellow trainee teacher. We discussed the
use of technology and popular culture in the classroom, she was very much for
the use of technology in class and has seen several lessons where the use of
iPads and the variety of apps have strengthened and deepened the child’s
learning. Furthermore, she mentioned that she has seen the use of popular
culture being used as an aid for engagement and in the reward system. We also
talked about whether technology was used throughout the whole school, her
response was that they did and they regularly had training days to keep up to
date with new advances. However, her only criticism was that she feels that
technology is replacing reading books and that we were brought up to physically
read a book and not off a screen. I strongly agree with this, as I love being
able to read a book and see the progression of pages.
Within our seminar
discussion our table spoke about how technology was good because it was
current, portable, light and moving with current change. We also talked about
how technology is a brilliant aid for children with SEN. Jon Audain talks about
‘Trial, error and review’ in his book, and how this is one of the best
processes to come of technology. ‘Trail, error and review’ on computers allows
children to change their work unlimited times, meaning it can continuously be
improved without have to rewrite the work numerous times.

Text Examples
The example I am using from the examples of text is from tagxedo. What I
love about this website is that you can change the shape that the text goes into.
I was able to change the colour and the font adding versatility to the website,
meaning it could be used during topic lessons. I feel that this would also be a
fun activity for children to do as there is a wide range of shapes they could
choose from. (Heart, food, animals, music and trees)
I would most definitely use this in the classroom for topic wall displays.
I chose an umbrella and used words that relate to the weather. Here is the
example I made in our ICT lesson:

I agree that it is a really good website, and that it is a good tool to e.g. making a brainstorm on the topic you are working on in the classroom. The fact that you can use a lot of different colours and shapes, instead of just writing it on the whiteboard with a black pen, can also be very inspiring for the children.
ReplyDeleteHow could it be used for children with SEN? (I have seen one way but it would interesting to have others ideas on it)
ReplyDeleteA child on my last school placement suffered from ADHD, behavioral issues and was of low ability in his class, and to motivate him and help him keep up with the rest of the class, he was given a small keyboard and screen (almost like a mini-ipad) to help him. This is not an SEN case as such, but I've also seen this being used by a child whose handwriting was incomprehensible, so until this improved, he was allowed to use a keyboard to type out work.
ReplyDeleteI have seen the iPads being used as an aid for communication with SEN children as well has improving fine motor skills and control. It was very interesting to see, they were also more engaged and willing to learn as they were interested by the iPad and its functions.
