I interviewed my fellow
student from Denmark. We talked about the use of technology and popular culture
in classroom, and she said that she was a strong believer in the fact that
educators have to try sometimes to see things from the children’s perspective,
and that she had learned that technology and popular culture can be a very
helpful source when it comes to learning new things. There are countless numbers of
e.g. apps for the IPad, which can be used in the classroom. There are no limits
on what teachers can do they just have to be creative. We both believe that
teachers should be innovative and
open to trying new things.
We also talked about the “critical parents” – parents who might not think that using e.g. an IPad or a comic book in the classroom is such a good idea. I think there always will be parents that have questions about the way you teach, and what you bring into the classroom. It is a teacher’s job as an educator to be prepared and to be able to defend the way she teach by using the National curriculum as guidelines, so she know why she is teaching the way she does, and what the children will be able to learn from it.

The example I will like to use is from the site Storybird.com. It is very easy to access and would be an effective and creative way for children to create their own story online.
One thing I thought could cause some problems was the fact that once you have chosen your category, you can only use the pictures provided from that particular one, so you have to create and make a story that matches the pictures on your screen. In the end, you do not really have a free choice to write whatever it is you have on your mind. On the other hand, it could be a helpful source to provide some scaffold, guidelines and ideas for what they could write about.
I would consider using it in my classroom, because I think it is a good way for children to develop their imagination and their writing skills. The fact that they are becoming “authors” and are able to publish their work when they are done, could also give them huge motivation.

Why do you think the 'critical parents' might not like the idea of technology in the classroom?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have experienced in Denmark, some parents do not like that their child/children play "games" or what ever on e.g. IPads. They do not think it belongs in the classroom. So thats why a teacher has to be able to tell them why and what the learning outcome will be from using it.
